Many Happy Returns

Two great birthdays were celebrated in July: America’s and Mine. When I was a kid, I hated having a summer birthday. I meant I could never bring cupcakes to school and wear the birthday crown and get all the other kids to sing to me. However, now that I’m older I understand the benefit of being born when days are long and nights are warm. This year I celebrated our country’s birth in Brooklyn Bridge Park with barbecue,  good friends, and fireworks.

My own birthday was a different affair – a glorious parade of cakes and song. It’s a silly tradition, but I love the singing, the candles, and making the secret wish. I could have taken three separate wishes, but instead I made the same wish three times to better my chances. Will it come true? We’ll see…
