Day By Day

Godspell on BroadwayI saw Godspell this weekend at the Circle in the Square theatre on Broadway. It’s such a simple show, and I wasn’t expecting to be dazzled. Hunter Parrish was a guileless,  childlike Jesus. He’s a strong actor, but a less developed vocalist. He didn’t quite have the pipes to sell the finale on the cross, but I was in tears as he made the rounds to say his goodbyes at the last supper. Telly Leung from Glee was also in the show. He was great! However, my favorite cast member was Wallace Smith, who played John the Baptist/Judas. He had some of the best songs in the show, and the voice to make it happen.

Theatre in the round can be very challenging, but this production made excellent use of hidden trampolines, elevators, trapdoors, and even a pool. The lighting design was especially well done, and was largely responsible for creating the different areas of the show. I really enjoyed this show, but I also secretly love gospel rock. I realize this may not be everyone’s cup of tea…

This is my last week of teaching at the fashion college this semester! Where did the time go? It feels like just the other day I was copying my syllabus and getting my classes ready. I will spend the next five days in a constant state of grading papers/projects/presentations. Goodbye sleep. It was nice to have known you.
